London Dance Improvisation

Management & Producing

Mafê runs her own dance classes under the name of London Dance Improvisation. Her aim is to facilitate a network of improvisation-based dance practitioners within and beyond the dance community by widening the access, encouraging dialogue and challenging preconceived understandings on what improvisation entails.

Please watch this space for future developments on this work.

Past initiatives include:

INTRODUCTION TO DANCE IMPROVISATION

Drop-in classes exploring improvisation as a way of creating dance through instant composition. By listening to our needs and becoming aware of our body, we will discover infinite possibilities of “dancing our own dance”.

Each session will be based on a theme ranging from notions of anatomy to different uses of space, music and relationships to other people. We will awaken our senses through somatic studies and partner-based exercises; we will then respond to creative tasks that will help us understand these principles and expand our movement vocabulary.

IMPROVISATION & COMPOSITION WORKSHOPS

With an emphasis on musicality and choreography for performance, Mafê Toledo and Jan Lee design sessions to help turn your existing movement practice into creative material.

In each session there will be plenty of time to prepare the body, reflect and talk, investigate, play and have fun, as well as watching each other in a supportive environment.

Sessions usually run on sets of 3 monthly dates – participants are welcome to drop-in or book for the whole term.
